The opening stage rolls out from the great vermilion gate of Kashima Jingū — one of Japan's oldest shrines — after a safety blessing and a parade to the first torii. From there it runs north up the Jōban coast to Hitachi, 108 km along the Pacific edge of Ibaraki.
