SHIKAHACHI

The Route

800 km from Kashima to Hachinohe, following the Pacific coast of East Japan across the Jōban and Sanriku arcs, with an interval tour in between.

About 800 km in all. Guided tours take trains on a few sections, so the riding distance is shorter; self-guided riders cover the full distance on the road.

Interval Tour

Three rest days between the two riding arcs — a chance to see the region off the bike. A boat cruise through the pine islands of Matsushima Bay and the Zen temple of Zuiganji; the golden hall of Chūsonji at Hiraizumi, a UNESCO World Heritage site; Sendai Castle and the statue of Date Masamune; and, on the way to Ishinomaki, the tsunami-memorial schools of the coast.
